Heidi Your Gluten and Dairy Intolerance is all in Your Head

If like me you have gone years undiagnosed, it was such a relief when I finally discovered that my health issues dating back to childhood, where connected to dairy and gluten intolerance.

However some people still think I am ‘precious’ because I don’t have an immediate anaphylactic reaction if I do eat it – they simply think I am trying to stay trendy and be a pain in the arse!

Although I feel like I have this gluten and diary free thing fairly sorted, when it comes to travelling I have found that my current adventures have proven everyone has a weak spot.

When we travelled to New Zealand and Australia two years ago it was extremely easy to stay on track, especially because they are big into the Paleo diet. However travelling to a remote island in the Maldives with less options; has proven a little challenging for my will power!! We are all human after all......

Thoddoo island a local island where we are staying in the Maldives has an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables grown on the island so you would think with all the delicious fresh juices that there would be no reason for me to fall off the wagon. But if you saw the mouth watering chapattis in the morning and the milk coffees, milkshakes and ice creams to cool you down, you might be tempted to fall off the wagon like me!! The Hedika which are the local snacks they eat here in the afternoons are also full of gluten so should be a no no but a little bite here and   there surely won’t make a big difference will it???

So three weeks in and I have struggled to go to the toilet (number twos) at all. My stomach is sore and bloated and I feel so lethargic. I then started the mother of all colds (yes the only person to catch a cold in the tropical heat) where my sinuses have exploded. Needless to say, this was the last straw and Heidi needed to get a whole lot of cop on from now on.

There really is no excuse, I found soya milk in the shop in the main island so my coffees do not  have to have cows milk. I don’t need afternoon snacks like hedika and like I have for so many years I really can forego the milkshakes and ice cream!!

The local food here is usually naturally gluten free with rice, curry, fresh salads and the desserts are beautiful plates of fresh local fruit.

So the next time someone tells me that it is a fad and all in my head, they can come on holiday with me and experience Heidi with no will power going on a dairy and gluten binge and then nurse me back to health!

It will take a while for me to get back on track, the cramps are quite severe but I have no one to blame but myself.

Moral of the story is – do what suits your body best, try not to give in to temptation like me and others opinions are just that, opinions - they are not fact!
